Blackwell, OK – A carbon monoxide leak in the high school practice gymnasium sickened a number of students and several were taken to a hospital Monday morning, Blackwell Fire Chief Dirk Seabridge said.

About 8:45 a.m. the seventh- and eighth-grade students were in the practice gymnasium for physical education class when two students passed out in the shower areas, Seabridge said.

Eight students were taken to Integris Blackwell Regional Hospital.

There were 35 students and three teachers in the gymnasium at the time. Workers were fixing the leak Monday morning, and the gymnasium was closed. The rest of the school buildings remained open, Seabridge said.
