Indianapolis, IN – Eight people were taken to Methodist Hospital on Thursday on suspicion of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Indianapolis firefighters were dispatched to a home on the 1800 block of Mutz Drive on the far-east side just after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Emergency crews arrived to find five adults and three children exhibiting signs of illness. Three of the adults were unconscious.

Firefighters detected an unidentified smell in the home and immediately shut off the furnace and water heater.

A test showed carbon monoxide levels inside the residence to be 160 ppm – more than four times the 35 ppm that will set off a carbon monoxide detector. OSHA limits long-term workplace exposures to less than 50 ppm over an 8-hour period.

The family did not have a working carbon monoxide detector in the home, firefighters said.

All eight residents were taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment.
