Cordele, GA – CORDELE A natural gas explosion rocked an apartment at Sunset Homes Thursday afternoon blowing out windows and causing several fires throughout the dwelling and even damaging the neighboring apartment.
According to Chief Augustus Telfair firefighters with the Cordele Fire Department responded to the scene located at 602 West 23rd Avenue Apt. A. at approximately 5 p.m. They were notified enroute that the explosion had occurred and the city utility department was notified to cut off the gas and electricity at the location.
Telfair reported the heaters were gas, as was the furnace and hot water heater and they were uncertain which element caused the explosion.
“The explosion was like a flash fire,” said Telfair. “In addition to the windows being blown out there was other significant damage to the apartment and Apartment B as well.”
Paint peeled off the walls and several small fires broke out in the home. Cabinet doors in both the apartment where the explosion occurred and the neighboring apartment were blown off and dishes blew from them. The bathroom ceiling of Apartment B also caved in due to the explosion.
Residents were home at the time of the explosion where it took place but the residents from Apartment B were not home at the time of the blast. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 6:52 p.m.
