Winner, SD – A propane tank explosion is to blame for an accident that nearly leveled a Winner home and sent a family of five to the hospital for their injuries.
It happened just after 6:00 a.m., Friday, on the 400 block of W. 1st Street in Winner. People throughout the town said they felt the ground shake when the explosion happened.
It was an explosion that, literally, rocked the town of Winner leaving a two-story home destroyed and many of its neighbors pretty shaken up.
“Then it was a humongous boom, we got up, pounded on the neighbors door,” Carol Boerner said.
Carol Boerner and her husband Bill, like much of the Winner community, awoke to a sound, Friday, they never thought they’d hear.
“We have chandeliers in our living room and the blast knocked those down. We didn’t know what happened,” Carol said.
Winner Fire Chief Darin Nelson said a propane explosion was to blame for nearly leveling the home, injuring five people living inside.
“To look at it, the force it took to do that. I can’t imagine what it was like for the folks who were in the house,” Winner Fire Chief Darin Nelson said. “The eastern half of the roof went up and over the trees, can’t imagine what it took to do that.”
Neighbors say the blast could be heard, and felt, from blocks and a few miles away.
“Even standing here looking at it, it looks like the Oklahoma tornado came through and blew it apart. It’s just unreal,” Carol said.
As much of the neighborhood now sits in awe of this damage, they can only hope those who were inside are OK as it will be a long road to recovery.
Stick with KSFY as we learn more about their condition. Neighbors also say they plan to set-up a fund to help the family get back on their feet.
