Rochester, NY – Three tenants and three others inside a two-family home in Rochester were taken to the hospital Tuesday to be treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities said.
Authorities said a tenant inside the home on Avenue A awoke about 9 p.m. to a carbon monoxide detector going off, according to Deputy Chief George Peterson Jr. of the Rochester Fire Department. On scene, firefighters discovered a high concentration of carbon monoxide throughout the building, Peterson said, adding that RG&E officials said a problem with the furnace may be the cause.
The six individuals were taken to Rochester General Hospital to be treated.
The residents will be assisted by the American Red Cross of Rochester until it is safe to return to the home, Peterson said.
“We would’ve had a worse outcome if she didn’t have a working carbon monoxide detector,” Peterson said.
