Jasper, IN – Authorities believe two individuals transported for treatment this morning were sickened by carbon monoxide escaping in their home.
An ambulance was called just after 6 a.m. today to assist a woman in the 900 block of Hasenour Avenue who reported experiencing vertigo-like symptoms, according to Jasper Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kenny Hochgesang.
Once at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, Hochgesang said, carbon monoxide was reportedly found in the woman’s system.
The woman told authorities her juvenile son was still at the home so firefighters and the Jasper Police Department responded at 6:45 a.m. The juvenile, who was reportedly not alert, was carried outside by an officer and a firefighter and then transported for treatment.
The fire department confirmed the house did contain a high amount of carbon monoxide.
Gas service to the home was shut off until a contractor and authorities can track down the source of the carbon monoxide, according to Hochgesang.
Two trucks and five firefighters were on the scene for approximately 75 minutes.
Jasper Municipal Utilities and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services also assisted.
