Mulvane, KS – Authorities responded Monday to a house explosion southeast of Mulvane. It happened around 8:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Geuda Springs Road.

Two contract workers were critically injured and transported to Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita with burns.

Officials said the home was completely leveled.

“There’s debris scattered all amongst the property, I mean it was a pretty significant explosion in the home,” said Gordon Fell, Mulvane Public Safety Director.

Captain Lowell Ester said one patient appeared to be burned over a significant part of his body.

“The patient that was blown out of the upstairs, he was able to get ahold of Sumner County 911,” Ester said. “One was in the basement when the explosion occurred, and he somehow crawled out of the house.”

The state fire marshal was called to investigate. Authorities are looking at propane as the possible cause of the explosion.

“We assume, looking at the debris field, we must have had a gas leak, and the contractors said they were trying to get an air compressor to come on,” said Ester.

More than a half dozen agencies including Mulvane, Rose Hill, Derby, Wichita, Sumner and Cowley all responded with fire crews and water.
