Wintersville, OH – Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said a 12-year-old girl died Tuesday morning of carbon monoxide poisoning in a home along Linmar Ave. in Cross Creek Township.
Her mother is in a hospital, fighting for her life.
Abdalla says a car was left running in an attached garage, and it didn’t take long for the fumes to fill the Mallory family’s home.
“It’s a heartbreaking tragedy that occurred in this community,” Abdalla said.
Jada Mallory died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Her mother, Cynthia Mallory, was also overcome and taken to the hospital in serious condition.
“It took a while for us to get into the home,” Abdalla said. “Wintersville Fire Department had their fans trying to air it out. I guess the fumes were just overwhelming.”
Abdalla said no foul play is suspected. Neither is suicide.
